As soon as I walked into the Mary Jacobs Library on January 14, I knew Tech Night was big. The program was not scheduled to begin for another few minutes, but there were already five people sitting in the lobby, gathered around the two laptops, talking with Rich Loomis and Chris Murray.
Loomis has been the Electronic Services Librarian at the Somerset County Library System’s Bridgewater Library since 2003. He and Murray, an Adult Services Librarian at the Bridgewater Library are holding tech nights at all of the Somerset County Library System branches throughout the year. Loomis wanted to hold these programs “to make our clients aware of all the electronic resources and materials we have available to them.”
The tech nights work like open houses; residents come in any time during the program and have the opportunity to learn about the library system’s digital media collection of e-books, audiobooks, music, and movies. Loomis and Murray explain what the digital media collection is; demonstrate how to check items out through the library system website; explain how to use the items with a computer, iPod, MP3 player, or other player; and answer any questions attendees may have.
The turnout for the Mary Jacobs Library Tech Night was “one of our best turnouts ever,” according to Loomis. Not only did people show up early for the event, but they stayed for a long time as well. “Usually they come in and it’s ten to fifteen minutes, but some people stayed for about an hour or so.”
The library system has about 4,000 items available online. The collection can be accessed by visiting the library system’s website at http://www.somerset.lib.nj.us/, and selecting “digital media collection” from the “online resources” menu. Library patrons can check out digital resources from home; all they need is internet access, their library card number and pin, software that can be downloaded for free from the library system website, and their computer to download the item onto. Items can then be transferred from the computer onto a portable player for use on the go.
A few of the portable players discussed at the Mary Jacobs Library tech night were iPods, Nooks, and Kindles. Information on a particular player’s compatibility with the digital media collection is available on the website, in addition to a tutorial on how to use the digital media collection
About 2,400 items are checked out each month, with audiobooks being the most popular.
Checkouts have increased every year since the library system bought its first materials in mid-2005. Items can be checked out for either seven or 14 days, and up to 15 items can be checked out at a time. At the end of the lending period, items automatically expire; they will self delete off of some players, but may need to be manually deleted off of others.
Gwen McCullough, a Montgomery resident who attended the tech night at Mary Jacobs Library, was especially interested in audiobooks. She has used audiobooks on tape and cd, and recently got an iPod. Ms. McCullough felt the tech night was a good opportunity to “come and listen to the experts and then go home and try it.”
Mechanic to Millionaire
the Peter Cooper Story at the Mary Jacobs Library
What do gelatin and the I-beam have in common? Come to the Mary Jacobs Library on Sunday, February 28th at 3 p.m. to find out. Rocky Hill resident Janet Gardner, principal of the Gardner Documentary Group, has directed and produced a 57 minute film about the fascinating life of 19th century inventor and philanthropist Peter Cooper. You may see some familiar faces as three local residents are amongst the re-enactors and extras - Jacob Donahue plays baby Peter, Phoebe Stryker plays Peter's daughter, and George Morren plays a doctor. Ms. Gardner will be here for a Q&A session after the screening. This family-friendly program is free and open to the public but we request that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org. Refreshments will be served.
The film was assisted by a grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State. It was also made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. In September of 1934, the luxury cruise ship SS Morro Castle, in route from Havana to New York City, caught fire and ran aground in the shallow waters off the coast of Asbury Park, NJ and continued to burn for weeks. A dangerous tropical storm had developed just before the fire started and many passengers and crew had retired to their cabins, including the captain who apparently died of a heart attack just before the fire started. 137 people lost their lives. Following the disaster, ship officers and a cruise line official were indicted on charges related to the fire. If you are interested in hearing more, come to Mary Jacobs Library on Tuesday, February 16th at 7:30. Gary Crawford, local historian from Neptune, will fill us in on the details of the events leading up to the fire and what happened after the fire. The program is free and open to the public but we request that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org .
