Adult Only Club @ Mary Jacobs Library

The Adult Summer Reading begins on June 27. Sign-up incentives abound and include free tote bags, free books, and bonus raffle tickets to biweekly drawings for prizes. So come on in and sign up – what have you got to lose. The more books (including audio-books) you read, the more raffle tickets you get but it is a low-pressure club and you decide your own level of participation. There will be system-wide biweekly drawings for such things as an MP3 player, a digital camera, a Home Depot gift card, and, yes, a $50 gas card. The coveted annual Flamingo Award, complete with trophy, will be awarded again this year at our end of the season party on August 28 to the individual who has read the most books.

This summer features some fascinating programs. Interested in Sudoku, the logic-based placement puzzle craze that is sweeping the nation/world? On July 10 at 7:30, adult services librarian Candy will teach a Sudoku strategy session. You can learn all about subsets, pairs, triplets, one choice, elimination, scanning, subsets, x-wings, turbot fish, squirmbags, jellyfish, and yes, guessing. There will be door prizes. If you’re already in the know about Sudoku, may we suggest you drop by the library on August 7 at 7:00 pm and be part of the Sudoku Challenge which will feature a fiendish puzzle (that you probably cannot finish in the allotted time, but not to worry) and cash prizes.

Ever wonder what those CDs or LPs you no longer want are worth to somebody else? Jon Lambert, general manager of the Princeton Record Exchange, will explain to us on July 24 at 7:30 why that Beatles album you’ve been holding on to for the last 30 some years is worth only $2 while a Grateful Dead album from roughly the same era sells for $129 and why that Creed CD you loved for the longest time fetches only 25 cents at Princeton Record Exchange. Learn about the laws of supply and demand and assessing your audio collection.
We will round out the summer with a local history double feature movie showing (Griggstown and Then & Now:Montgomery & Rocky Hill) on July 31 at 7:00 pm and a concert featuring the Riverside Quartet which is comprised of a soprano, an alto, a tenor and a bass. They will entertain us with songs from the classics to Broadway show tunes to spirituals on August 21 at 7:30 pm.

While you must sign up for the summer reading club itself in person at the Adult Reference desk at Mary Jacobs Library at 64 Washington St. (route 518), Rocky Hill (how else will you get your goodies), you can register for the programs in person or by calling 609-924-7073 ext 4 or by emailing Candy at cwillis@sclsnj.org.

Keep Your Child Reading At The Mary Jacobs Library

Do you want to keep your child reading great books all summer long? Join the Mary Jacob’s Summer Reading Club! This year’s theme is Catch the Reading Bug and we will have you spinning! Children of all ages can earn prizes by tracking their reading time and by coming to the library for special programs and games.

Research has shown that, during the summer months, school aged children can experience a decline in their reading skills. Valuable time is spent each fall regaining skills and fluency. The solution is simple. Encourage your child to read by signing up for the reading club beginning June 16. You must register in person.

For more information about this or any of our programs, visit us at 64 Washington Street (route 518) in Rocky Hill, call us at 609-924-7073 ext 5 or check out our website at http://www.somerset.lib.nj.us.

Cool Movies For Hot Summer Nights

Just when you thought is was safe to go back to the library: Mary Jacobs Library presents free blockbuster movie nights this summer! Join us for four classic films by Steven Spielberg — the master of the summer blockbuster — showing Friday nights starting July 11.

We provide the big screen, drinks, snacks, trivia and air conditioning! All films start promptly at 7pm (side door opens 6:45). Space is limited, so please register by calling 609-924-7073 ext 4 or by contacting Cynthia at clambert@sclsnj.org. If registering by email, please include “Movie” in the subject line and mention which date(s) you are registering for and how many will attend. See you at the show!

July 11, 2008: Jaws The term ‘summer blockbuster’ was created because of this movie. Released in 1975, this movie is a classic thriller. Amity Island had everything. Clear skies. Gentle surf. Warm water. People flocked there every summer. It was the perfect feeding ground. Rated PG.

July 18, 2008: Close Encounters of the Third Kind We are not alone... Released in 1977, this film established that Spielberg was no one-hit-wonder. Rated PG.

July 25, 2008: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark See the film that started it all. Indy fights the Nazis to stop them from using the power of the Lost Ark of the Covenant. Released in 1981, this film remains one of the most successful summer movies ever made! (Your chance to check out where the crate goes at the end!) Rated PG.

August 1, 2008: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Considered to be one of Spielberg’s best films, this movie was both a critical and commercial success when it was released in 1982. The story of a boy and his alien; an adventure classic for the whole family. Rated PG.
