Local History at the Mary Jacobs Library - Sept 23

As many of you know, George Washington did in fact sleep here in Rocky Hill. From August to November 1783, Washington’s final Revolutionary War headquarters was at Rockingham, widow Margaret Berrien’s house set on a rocky hillside overlooking the Millstone River. It was at Rockingham that he wrote the farewell orders to his troops and awaited the signing of the Treaty of Paris that officially ended the Revolutionary War.

Mary Jacobs Library is proud to present Rockingham: the Road to Peace, a 22-minute movie conceived by the Rockingham Association and produced/directed by Fred Frintrup. Prior to the showing of the movie, Robert F. Jones, Professor of History at Fordham University and author of biographies of George Washington, will discuss the important events that occurred while Washington was at Rockingham and how they shaped American history. The September 23 event will begin at 7:30 pm. We ask that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4.

As an adjunct to the above program, the MJL Non-fiction Book Discussion group will be discussing Washington’s Crossing by David Hackett Fischer on September 16 at 4:30 pm. Both programs are free and open to the public.

MHS Student Creates Fundraising Website for Library

Many local residents have heard that Mary Jacobs Library is having difficulty meeting its capital expenses and want to help. Montgomery High School (MHS) junior Ryan Lucht has contributed his internet skills to make helping easy. He created a website, savemaryjacobslibrary.com, that provides information on the library and its fundraising efforts. The website also allows people to make donations to the library using PayPal. And they have been making them every day since the website’s inception in mid-July.

When Ryan heard his mom, Karen, say she was attending a meeting to discuss fundraising efforts for the library he said, “Can I come too?” A devoted library patron, he notes, “I’m notorious for checking out way too much stuff!”At the meeting, the possibility of accepting donations online was discussed, but some were unsure how to make it happen. Ryan said, “I can do that” and starting working on it on the spot using his Apple laptop.

Ryan said he has “been building websites forever,” and that he got his start in web design at the library. When he was in second grade, he discovered the nonfiction section of the library, and found the book “Build a website in a weekend.” Ryan explains, “Specialized knowledge is something you need in the workplace and the library is a great place to get it.” A prime example of this, he is now the proprietor and sole employee of Ryan Lucht Marketing, which provides internet expertise to local businesses. Wendy Rayner, President of the Friends of Mary Jacobs Library, says this is one example of how the library is still important – even a necessity - in today’s digital age.

For the first time in its 35 year history, the library is having an annual appeal to raise funds to cover its maintenance and operating expenses, with a goal of $100,000 by December. The library lost half of the funding traditionally provided by Montgomery Township this year. While it is a member of the Somerset County Library System (SCLS), the library is privately owned by the Mary Jacobs Memorial Library Foundation. SCLS provides staff and materials, but the Foundation must pay all building and grounds expenses. The 2005 expansion of the library, which doubled its size, has increased these costs.

Brenda Fallon, President of the Trustees of the Foundation, explains, “We are trying to stop the erosion of the endowment” given by Harold Jacobs. This donation enabled the library to open its doors, but only a third of it remains after the many expansions and improvements that have been made to the library. In addition to donations, the Foundation is seeking people who can volunteer their expertise in graphic design and databases to the library.

Ryan is also an accomplished drummer with the MHS Marching, Jazz, and Concert Bands, and has even used this talent to help the library. He and a few of his friends have been providing jazz music for the library’s wine and cheese fundraising event held in the fall for the last few years. This year’s event is scheduled for November 13.

Ryan says his future goals for savemaryjacobslibrary.com are to get it into Google, and get it highly ranked via search engine optimization since “people are more likely to click on the first entries they see on a page.” He also plans to create a ‘savemaryjacobslibrary.com’ Facebook page.

Adult Graphic Novels Writers Not Just A Good Old Boys Club Anymore

A recent cursory review of the small, but tasteful adult graphic novel collection at Mary Jacobs Library reveals a startling statistic – less than ten percent of the comics/commix are written by women. It is most curious why that would be, given that there are about as many or more women than men in this country.

Come to the library on July 20 at 7:30 pm to meet local graphic novelist, Jennifer Hayden, author of the forthcoming novel, The Story of My Tits, to be published by Top Shelf and writer of webcomics for the Brooklyn based webcomic collective ACT-I-VATE, and Philadelphian Emily Steinberg, a painter by training and author of webcomic Graphic Therapy: Notes from the Gap Years. Both women write, draw, and illustrate their own comics. They’ll talk about women in the comics field; they’ll talk about and to each other; they’ll talk about their past works and their future works. It will be a fun, even hilarious, evening filled with laughter. Follow these links to get a preview of their works http://www.act-i-vate.com/64.comic and http://www.smithmag.net/graphictherapy .

This program is free and open to the public and is for adults only. We ask that you pre-register by calling 609-924-7073 x4 or by emailing cwillis@sclsnj.org . There will be refreshments.
