SONGS AND STORIES OF OLD CANAL DAYS at Rockingham

Matt Dodd, whose rousing and thoroughly enjoyable program last year of Revolutionary War music, song and story, will come to Rockingham’s Dutch barn on Saturday, September 23, at 1:30 pm to present Songs and Stories of Old Canal Days. It will bring to life the glory days of the American canals, such as our Delaware and Raritan Canal, now a NJ State Park. Vicki Chirco, historian for D&R Canal, will also appear to talk about its construction and importance.

Rockingham is located on Rte. 603 (Laurel Ave./Kingston-Rocky Hill Rd.), one mile north of Rte. 27 in Kingston and one mile south of Rte. 518 in Rocky Hill. Visit the website, www.rockingham.net for further information.

Montgomery Triple Challenge Debuts to Support Local EMS

 

1-4 pm. Proceeds will benefit Montgomery EMS.

 

The Triple Challenge is a triathlon for children aged 5-13 and will include a run, bike and obstacle course at the beautiful Skillman Park, Montgomery Township, NJ. The run and bike races are being organized by Dong Kim of Crossfit08844 and Crossfit Kids; and the obstacle course will be organized by John Rooney of Fal-Rooney Camps and Events. In addition to the races, there will be carnival games, face painting, balloonist and other kid-friendly activities.

Historic Blawenburg Church On Somerset County Tour

Blawenburg Church in the historic Village of Blawenburg on Route 518 will be a featured stop on the Somerset County Weekend Journey through the Past on October 14 - 15. 

Blawenburg Church has been in continuous operation since it was built as a Dutch Reformed Church in 1832. It has original pews and retains many other original architectural features. The sanctuary will be open on Saturday, October 14, from 10 am to 5 pm. Pictures, artifacts, and documents will be on display and docents will be ready with information.

On Sunday, October 15, the church will be open for tours and exhibits from 12 pm until 4 pm. A special concert will be presented by organist Kathleen S. Connolly at 2pm including "The Battle of Trenton" by James Hewitt. A 15-minute blow-by-blow keyboard sonata depicting the events of the historic battle, Hewitt wrote it in 1797 and dedicated the piece to George Washington. A repertoire of traditional American music will also be included in the concert.
